Thank you; it’s a good day when I learn something.  Regards, Rob

Euro-Yen crossrate

I wish i had a graphical representation of the ever talked about “yen carry trade”.  Is it the yen vs. USD or does one of the commodity currencies like the Aussie vs. yen more accurately track this often mentioned topic??  It’s hard to say, but I tend to prefer the Euro/Yen crossrate.  The action in this chart is kind of sloppy lately and there is considerable negative divergences.  Something to keep an eye on.  Lots of unraveling in the global economy will take place when the carry trades are reversed.

It’s surreal…

Sprott:

“How bad is it? In an investment conference last week, the CEO of Wells Fargo

went as far as to say that the US housing market is in the worst shape it’s been since the GreatDepression of the 1930’s. Anecdotally, in Florida some houses are being sold for half the price

they were during the peak of the housing bubble two years ago. For banks and mortgage

lenders, that’s scary stuff that is sending shock waves throughout the financial system. Yet

stock markets have yet to clue in… it’s surreal.”

A brief explaination from the help files:  http://arch0708.goldtent.net/soee-page/

Thanks Redneck

I was hoping you’d weigh in on this.  What I don’t understand is the reasoning behind this trade.  If the USD was falling why would you buy t-bills and sell EuroDollars?  What are the mechanics behind this trade?  I thought this TED spread widening was an indication of financial uncertainty.  So traders would opt for more “secure” t-bills and get rid of their EuroDollars.  Is this making any sense?  Is it primarily dollar driven or is it some other indicator that measures uncertainty - such as the yen carry trade unwinding or volatility?

Re. the hit counter; would you ’splain the differences between hits, page views, files etc. please. The big numbers look impressive, but they’re sorta meaningless to me. TIA, wayside

the ted spread is the difference between the 90 day t-bill and the eurodollar. if the dollar is falling, buy the t-bill, sell the eurodollar. the eurodollars are us dollars outside the control of the fed. (in foreign countries) hope this helps.

Interesting HG Wells quote and a warning from the past. . Especially, since he was a supporter of the New Deal and Roosevelt. He visted Russia and even lectured Stalin and Lenin on his view for a socialist world. In his book, “Modern Utopia” he even expressed his wish for a society that was run and organised by “humanists” and what he called well-educated people. He was critical of the role that the privileged enjoyed in a capitalist society. In his utopia people gain power as a result of their intelligence and training. Many of his writings were almost a blueprint for the socialist elite that now seek to rule the world and create teh new world order he warned about where so many of us would perish while revoling against it. Unfortunately, he was a visionary to a great extent and foretold many of the things which have come to pass.

Good golly, Ms Moggy, where are you?

I don’t know how to pull up that spread chart.  I can pull-up the EuroDollar price on Stockcharts, but not the rate chart.  For t-bills, I can pull up the 90 day rate, but not the price.  Do you watch a futures chart for that?  I put both the EuroDollar and the 2 year price on this chart.  I wish i could see this TED spread; I believe it is widening.  I’ve heard this indicates more worries about the global financial system.  One of my friends used to trade bonds and he tried to explain this to me. It had something to do with selling EuroDollars and buying T-bills…and this made the spread widen during times of financial uncertainty.  I’m not sure if that is correct.  Maybe you can sort this out for me.
