Actually I’m the EE for a company that made ultrasonic
pest repellers. Don’t know if they worked or not. Might
be a good place for a test. I think the pilelings keep
the Amish huts from washing away from the hurricane
storm surge. You already expat in CR? You beat us to
it.
AuGirl, I’ve been stuck at 45D N for the past 20 years.
Have had to endure the anual mini ice age. Went to Miami
for a business trip a few years ago and when I stepped out
of the terminal and the hot humid air hit me I was in
Heaven.

…maybe those sand flies are full of gold ….like the sand in the river….
……it would give new meaning to the term Gold Bug….
…you can take the gold out of the country.but can you take the gold out of the bug…?
how about a bug net around the house
or give me bugs
CR has some of the finest weather in the world, between 62 and 90 degrees year round, which is the typical climate for San José in the central highlands. Also, San José has zero mosquitoes and almost zero flies, due to lack of wetlands, steady breeze, and a degree of cleanliness never witnessed by these eyes. I have since learned that CR spends more per capita on health care and education than the United States, and even boasts a lower STD rate than the US. Its doctors and dentists are trained in the US
Fall freeze? Bug killing companies? The only way to get rid of all bugs in a tropical zone would be by nuclear explosion or maybe napalm. You move slow to take the heat of summer and to watch for critters on the ground. Homes on stilts are advisable, but there are many on slabs in Belize. I used to stay in one from time to time with no problem. One has to have an affinity for nature to enjoy it. A healthy dose of common sense is required in warmer climates. Absolutely would suggest lots ofd research and a visit for 2-3 weeks before considering a move there (or anywhere for that matter). It ’s not like the all inclusive resorts in Mexico, Costa Rico, Panama, etc. That is the charm and the allure-to get there and set up before the tourista invasion.
Note: houses on stilts near the coast are on stilts partly because the winds and water can pass under them without blowing them off the foundations and flooding them..same reason they do it on the east coast of the US.
You kidding me..? I was there in September and if you call 90-100F the fall freeze then we got a problem Houston ![]()
is their a bug killing company .. in the area.. or do the bugs muliply to fast .. cant be worse than those bugs along the mississippi river ,, chiggers.. ..
Does the fall freeze kill off the bugs later in the year?
I build shopping centers for less than the construction costs mentioned. At $80/sf construction cost in Belize, I/m thinking modular units imported might be worth looking into. It would depend on transportation costs..may even be a manufacturer in Mexico but I’m not sure. As I remember the road down the Yucatan is fairly good. Local administration would have to support such a project and local workers would be required (no problem I would believe). There are a wide variety of kit homes available as well that could be shipped. Some research is needed and I will see what I can find out. Irish can let me know about utility issues and percolation for septic field installations..easy with corogated pipe. Just because no one has tried it, I would’nt discount the possiblities. The same idea worked in Haiti in the early seventies by someone else.
Re: the water system
Well , I saw alot of cisterns around but I believe Belmopan has a modern water plant that supplies water to Dangriga but Irish would be the best to ask about that ..
Auric is right..From what I saw, alot of houses closer to the sea are built on wood or concrete posts.. There are sand flies and mosquits but ya get used to them..I’m a bit of a pansie when it comes to bugs, critters and such and I didn’t have too much of a problem when I was down there FWIW.
Best for you to spend a week or so down there b4 you decide.
A nice mosquito net over the bed and ‘yer good to go!
Put some inverted sheet steel funnel cuffs around
the pileings and the base of the stair runners in pans
of used motor oil.

even the big bugs
