I did note it. And I also noticed that it had built into it a timidity that is likely to prevent his suggested corrective steps from going forward. I am referring to the sentence that says: “We’d better begin a public debate about whether it is feasible or desirable to construct any new nuclear plants”. Why the hesitancy and timidity on this topic?
If there are serious problems facing us on this continent requiring the kind of lifestle changes that Kunstler outlines in the rest of his essay, why only “begin debate” about nuclear power? Skip the debate and get on with the job. In my opinion, now is the time to get on with building new nuclear power plants on this continent.
Even Britain has caught onto the need to do like France has done to develop a substantial nuclear source of power. In my opinion, most of the changes that Kunstler lists will not get underway unless there is a renewed hope for a new age on this continent, and that in turn is dependent, in my opinion, on assured significant new sources of energy, at a scale that I think can be achieved only by nuclear power.
