“The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.” Sir Winston Churchill
This quote was in a church bulletin and it occured to me that this perfectly describes the path the US has followed from freedom to the coming of the totalitarian society being constructed here. What we have is ,of course ,the natural evolution of mob rule, otherwise labeled democacy. Being restricted in getting about and work while rehabilitating the new knee, I have had time to read a few books delayed too long and to reflect on the Belize project. The first half of the Churchill quote could be applied to the birth of a new beginning in that nation for many of us disillusioned, just plain worn down from the assaults of those who would control every aspect of our lives and constant assaults on liberty. Rather than a government formed to protect life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, we have a government at odds with the individual, who sees those who still believe in the principals this Republic was founded on as enemies of the state. The war on drugs, money laundering, tax law, the Patriot Act and so forth were not implemented to protect us from drug dealers, organized crime, or terrorists, but to assure government access to individual wealth. We cannot hide and soon will no longer be allowed to run. Of course, I realize all this is “singing to the choir”. But, I ask a little latitude on a Sunday to say a few things and waste some bytes.
There exists here a unique community, a group with common visions, beliefs and hopes. The PMs are a means to survive and prosper and may have been the common bond that originally was the reason for the Tent, but it has become far more. I am very thankful for the GE site management that finally pursuaded a small band with vision to start their own pm discussion site here and to even allow some of us to stry far off the trail at times. I will never understand the mind of the Vster who had no better sense than to piss in his own cistern. The evolution toward a new home for some, even inspiring a few to come out of retirement and use their skills and knowlege again, in a new land reminds me more and more, both in motivations and philosophy of Rand’s Objectivism and the premise of Atlas Shrugged. Am I the only one who sees that spirit living on in the Belize situation. Is Irish John Gault?
I love my country, my ancestors have fought and died for it from the Revolution to the Civil War, and WWII. But, I will no longer focus energies on those things I can never change and will leave those battles to the generations to come. What has taken two hundred years to distort and destroy will not be undone in my lifetime. For me, I say those who fight and run away, live to fight another day. To help contruct a community in a new world, so my children and grandchildren have an option is more important to me today than a Quixotian quest of futility.
We find ourselves today in a global economy which places no value whatsoever on community. There have existed coherent communities in history, but there are none we can return to. Where we must begin is where we are now and I believe the basic structure exists in the group brought together by some Tenters and the efforts of the “advance team” in Belize. It is a community that seems to understand the necessary balance between the individual and those interests of the group that support the common interests of the individual members… the unequal sharing of blessings promised. I have no desire to remain and share in the misery while the elitists enrich themselves, drunk with arrogance and power. From the election process, the court system, to the finacial markets, the corruption has become so entrenched that they don’t even pretend to conceal it any longer. I’m not going to take it anymore or dwell on what has been lost. The future is looking brighter from my perspective.
Thanks to one and all who have contributed to this great site and to those whose efforts have been spent on the Belize project and all it’s facets.
