HONG KONG (MarketWatch) — Asian markets tracked Wall Street higher Thursday, recouping some losses from the previous session, with energy stocks such as Inpex Holdings Inc. in Japan and Woodside Petroleum in Sydney advancing after crude-oil prices ended at a record high in the U.S.
March crude oil prices rose 73 cents to finish at a record closing high of $100.74 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract expired Wednesday. The new front-month contract for delivery in April added 13 cents to $99.83 a barrel Thursday in electronic trading.
In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 Average gained 1.8% to 13,553.96 and the Topix index advanced 1.6% to 1,323.98.
Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 advanced 1.4% to 5,570.70 and South Korea’s Kospi added 0.9% to 1,702.53, while New Zealand’s NZX 50 slipped 0.1% to 3,593.01.
