Yes, the building was around in ‘92, I visited with her for a week in the late 80s…we meandered down to Key West for awhile and had a ball. Thank you for relieving me of worry about the building and for that, take this:

Hash browns were super. Followed your directions - however used a sterilized (bleached) tea towel and pressed the grated potatoes into that to get rid of water. Cooked on the cast iron skillet on the grill. Our daughter is here for the weekend so more later.
Yum!
Thanks.

We certainly need to keep an eye on these “darlings of the caribbean”, but the National Hurricane Center, which is only about 8 miles from where I live, is not even close to sounding off any alarm for us here in Miami. Hanna looks like its headed N.E. of us and anything goes for that one behind it. It’s too early to tell.
Your friend in Aventura will be fine…don’t worry. But bless her heart. 86 years old? WOW! You may want to find out if the building she lives in was around when Hurricane Andrew hit us in 1992 and, if it survived, the chances are good that she will be safe. She’s about 20 miles north of me.
Thanks a mil for helping us stay on top of it all.
You’re a blessing!

PS - WANKA, we need for you to check in with us, buddy, and let us know that you’re allright. Best wishes and stay safe.
(from Jesse’s Cafe Americain site - an excellent read in my opinion)
THE ASTUTE ECONOMY-WATCHER for Merrill Lynch, David Rosenberg, also strongly advises digesting the suspect GDP report with a “very large grain of salt.” Among other things, he casts a skeptical eye on how the report treats the decline in corporate profits. (We won’t keep you in suspense: The answer is: “gingerly.”)
More specifically, he notes, “national-account corporate profits declined at a 9.2% rate in the second quarter.” For domestic industries, he goes on, profits are down 14.4% year over year.
But according to the GDP report, domestic nonfinancial profits fell at a much sharper 22% annual rate. The reason the drop in total corporate earnings was limited to 9.2% was that, David relates, profits in the financial sector, so claims the report, surged — get this — at a 27% annual rate.
His wonderfully eloquent comment:
“Are you kidding me?”

Gads, I was focusing on the Keys and forgot about the Miami area…have an old and dear friend in Aventura, celebrating her 86th birthday today, who lives on the 9th floor of a lovely condo on a bay…and at her age she doesn’t need this stress…nor does anyone, really…but life is so hard on the elderly. Well, you need to keep a heads-up on Hanna and maybe consider evacuating to safer territory…like the NE Georgia mtns.
That eagle is wonderful, eh? Unfortunately, I ‘borrowed’ it from another forum and am unable to enlarge it. But here is where you need to focus, especially for the guy trailing Hanna:

ferret, a follow up to the supposed scholars critique of Palin’s qualifications is as follows:
Update: After reading this article, the McCain campaign issued the following statement: “The authors quote four scholars attacking Gov. Palin’s fitness for the office of Vice President. Among them, David Kennedy is a maxed out Obama donor, Joel Goldstein is also an Obama donor, and Doris Kearns Goodwin has donated exclusively to Democrats this cycle. Finally, Matthew Dallek is a former speech writer for Dick Gephardt. This is not a story about scholars questioning Governor Palin’s credentials so much as partisan Democrats who would find a reason to disqualify or discount any nominee put forward by Senator McCain.”

Hey, if a Dalek says she’s clearly unqualified, we know she’s the best available.
Who are these idiots? I’m surprised they are not charging $250 for their opinions.
to your area, she is predicted to be a monster…maybe it’s time to take flight.

I forgot to mention that the head of our largest corporation was a woman at the same time that those other women were in power.
It was all sewn up.
And now it’s time for breakfast. A very late one.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Hurricane Gustav was strengthening rapidly as it passed over Cuba and heads into the Gulf of Mexico Saturday, taking deadly aim for the U.S. Gulf Coast.
Gustav went from a tropical storm overnight to a violent Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale on Saturday, forcing residents from Florida to Louisiana to begin evacuation preparations and oil and gas companies to shut down in the region.
The National Hurricane Center’s storm trackers reported Gustav’s highest sustained winds at 150 mph, just short of the 156 mph readings that would propel the storm to Cat. 5 status - the highest on the scale.
While New Orleans could avoid a direct hit on Monday, the size of the storm and the threat of flooding has prompted officials in the region to shift from assisted, voluntary evacuations to mandatory evacuations for some low-lying Louisiana parishes beginning at 4 p.m. Eastern. On Friday, the Crescent City observed the anniversary of the Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the area just three years ago.
No city-run shelters were to be set up within the city limits, New Orleans officials said, but buses and trains were taking residents to safety and reportedly more than 7,000 National Guard troops already had been mobilized as of Saturday.
Also on Saturday, Sen. John McCain, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, told Fox News in an interview that events connected with the Republican National Convention scheduled to begin on Monday in the Twin Cities could be postponed due to Gustav.
In an interview to air on “FOX News Sunday,” McCain said that holding the convention while Gulf Coast residents suffer would be insensitive.
“I’m afraid … that we may have to look at that situation and we’ll try to monitor it,” McCain said. “But you know it just wouldn’t be appropriate to have a festive occasion while a near-tragedy or a terrible challenge is presented in the form of a natural disaster. So we’re monitoring it from day to day and I’m saying a few prayers too.”
Gustav was still far from the Gulf Coast Saturday, crossing the western tip of Cuba. Officials were warning residents of the Florida Keys to be prepared for high winds and heavy rains. The full impact of the storm is forecast to hit the northern Gulf Coast on Monday. While the storm could make landfall somewhere along a fairly wide path from Mississippi to Texas, current models show it aiming directly for the Louisiana coast and then moving to the west.
Governors of Alabama and Texas declared states of emergency ahead of the storm, which has already been blamed for the deaths of nearly 80 people in the Caribbean.
With an estimated 3,500 offshore rigs in the path of the storm, oil and natural gas facilities in the Gulf were shutting down and evacuating workers.
Royal Dutch Shell , BP Plc, Chevron Corp., Exxon Mobil, Hess and Petrobas were all in the process of shutting down their facilities in the region, according to media reports.
Oil traders are watching the storm’s projected path into the Gulf, home to 25% of U.S. oil production and 75% of U.S. natural gas production. October crude closed down 13 cents to $115.46 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange Friday. Oil was up 0.8% for the week.
Kevin Kerr, editor of Global Commodities Alert at KerrAlert.com, said, “Natural gas could be the big loser in this storm.”
About 6.6% of oil production in the Gulf of Mexico had been shut-in due to Gustav, the U.S. Minerals Management Service reported late Friday. The Gulf produces about 1.3 million barrels per day, MMS said. About 1.8% of natural-gas production was shut-in, it said. The Gulf produced about 7 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day in June 2008, it said.
Gustav isn’t the only weather threat. Tropical Storm Hanna, though not as strong and organized a storm as Gustav, is heading toward the Bahamas and currently expected to move in a more northerly direction. It could pose a serious threat to Florida and the U.S. coastline next week.
